Why Choose Tlc?

Quite simply, we hope that you will find us interesting, informative and down to earth enough to help you make two vital decisions about teacher training programmes:

  1. what kind of course is best for me - online or intensive residential?
  2. which training organisation shall I invest my time and hard earned cash in (how much is it going to cost?)

When you search for TEFL on the Google Search engine you will find over 8 million results. If you type "Teaching English as a Foreign Language" you have access to a staggering 54 million hits throughout the world.

What a choice!!

But other criteria has to be considered when choosing your qualification.

If your aim is to teach English to Speakers of Other Languages in the state education system of your own country, then it's almost certain that you will need a home-grown qualification. International TEFL/TESOL" qualifications are rarely sufficient.

If you are already a qualified and experienced teacher of another subject however, international qualifications are often accepted as evidence of re-training.

If you're a university graduate in any subject or can demonstrate that you have the qualifications to enter university AND you want to teach English in a non English speaking country, then you need a certificate-level qualification which is recognised all over the world by the private education sector.

There are many of these available of varying duration and quality including the Trinity College London CertTESOL and the RSA/Cambridge CELTA, language qualifications which are immediately recognisable throughout the world, and with reputations second to none.

Teaching Practice

Both of these prestigious courses have been run in our Las Palmas centre over the last two years, and although in principle course content is similar - each has its own distinctive "good" points to offer - the very nuts and bolts of teacher training.

BUT - we found there were drawbacks. If you think about it, what exactly can you get out of a 1 month intensive? Such courses, however good, can do little more than scratch the surface. There simply isn't enough time to do everything properly - everything is rushed - and what do you do if you don't feel too good or the pressure gets to you? All too often we have had to pick up the pieces - back to back TPs and weekend inputs just to catch up. Teaching practice is limited to just 6 short hours, and normally restricted to adults. Considering that nearly 50% of job offers around the world involve the teaching of children this is another important factor to take into account when shopping around for a TEFL programme.

We decided to stand back from the 1 month intensives and consider other possibilities.

The solution was obvious. Re-think the courses - take the very best of everything - and transform the whole into a distance training programme. Make the Teaching Practice flexible and cover all areas of the market - children, students, adults, business classes and 1 - to - 1. The perfect course!

A distance programme that gives you the flexibility to work at your own pace and at your own convenience.

A programme that removes all the stresses and strains of a normal 1 month intensive(that's assuming that you can dedicate a full month to study), and allows you to absorb and assimilate in your own time, and above all - a programme that still maintains the very high standards from which it was conceived.

Which Tlc programme would suit you? >
