Preliminary Certificate of Educational Studies in TESOL

ACTDEC level one course

This course is for anyone seeking a really sound introduction to the world of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

The programme consists of three introductory units each comprising three separate modules.

  • The first covers The Practice of TESOL
  • The second unit introduces The Teaching of Pronunciation
  • the third deals with Language Awareness

This distance course takes approximately 70 hours to complete and leads to the Preliminary Certificate of Educational Studies in TESOL. Holders of the certificate may use the ACTDEC Level 1 TESOL Assistant qualification title and the postnominal designation Pre-Cert.(ES)TESOL.

Duration

No two people work at the same pace, have similar commitments or study time available. You can pace yourself and work as quickly as you wish or take as long as you need. The Pre-Cert.(ES)TESOL takes on average 70 hours to complete. With full-time study (16-20 hours weekly) it is possible to complete the programme in a month or less. On a purely part-time basis (9-12 hours weekly) the course can be completed in seven to eight weeks.

Assessment and Award of the Certificate

Examination is by continuous assessment of the worksheet assignments for each unit module. There are no written examinations.

Re-submission of unsatisfactory assignments for regrading (except the 'Sounds of English') is at the discretion of the unit tutor and Director of Examinations.

Award of the Certificate is restricted to those who successfully complete the course and all assessment assignments.
