Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How will I be taught?
All Tlc courses are distance learning programmes (or part distance and part onsite intensive) if you select the study vacation option. Courses consist of a number of input modules, with self-assessment questions in each, followed by an answer key (for self re-evaluation) and then by a tutor-assessed worksheet. This form is most important and should only be returned to the course tutor when you are sure that it is as close to correct as you can get it.
Q. How am I assessed?
By continuous assessment. All coursework is continuously assessed and every worksheet tutored and graded. In this way you can keep track of your progress throughout the course, and any difficulties or doubts can be ironed out as they appear.
Q. Are your courses accredited?
Yes. They are accredited by ACTDEC - the Accreditation Council for TESOL Distance Education Courses. Please check our accreditation page and see for yourself.
Q. Do I need set books?
Yes, any professional course will have set books. They are very important to your background knowledge, and help (with our own input materials), to form the base for you to build on. Tlc courses include your set books in the course price (level 1 x 3 books and level 2 x 4 books) and they are delivered (free of charge) to your door.
Q. Can I see some of your course material?
Certainly. Check out our sample material >
Q. Must I be a native speaker to do your courses?
No! Non native speakers are more than welcome. In fact, some of our best trainees have been non native speakers. We actually telephone interview all prospective candidates before courses start — so your level of English can be discussed then.
Q. Is there a time limit for course completion?
No! That’s another plus for distance training prorammes. As no two people work at the same pace, have the same work commitments or study-time possibilities, Tlc courses are completely flexible. Just pace yourself — you can take as long as you like.
Q. What’s the difference between a TESOL course and a TEFL course?
Basically nothing — they are generally accepted as interchangeable. There are a number of confusing acronyms in the EFL world which can lead to bad decisions. Please check out our acronyms page.
Q. What is a modular course?
A modular course comprises of a series of self contained units, that together with other course material forms the basis of your qualification.
Q. What kind of qualification do I need?
That depends on where and how you want to work. Please go to our which course page for more information. For Tlc courses follow these links:
 Pre-Cert(ES)TESOL >
 Cert(ES)TESOL>
 Cert(TM)TESOL>
 Advanced Certificate in TESOL
and see for yourself.
Q. How do I contact my course tutor?
Contact is easy. Each course consists of a number of units, and each unit has a specialist personal tutor. You will be given the names and contact details with each unit as we send it to you. Contact can be made by telephone, email and through our website "live chat" room.
Q. What does the course fee cover?
Basically everything you need. There are no hidden costs. Please go to our "course fees" option for full details.
Q. How long is a Tlc Course?
Pre-Cert(ES)TESOL - 231 pages - 3 set books - 70 hours.
Cert(ES)TESOL - 494 pages - 4 set books -150 hours
Cert(TM)TESOL - 585 - 5 set books - 25 hours
Q. Can I pay for my course by instalments?
Certainly. Tlc have an interest free instalment plan to suit most pockets. View Course Fees for more information.
Q. What about teaching practice?
If you take advantage of our Study/Vacation option, which is a 1 to 1 programme, teaching practice and lesson observation is "FREE". You can do as many (or as few) hours as you like.

If you cannot come here to do your TP, then teaching practice is available to all course participants through the ATDEC teaching portfolio scheme.
Q. When can I start the course?
Anytime. Tlc operate a policy of continual enrolment, which means that you can start whenever you want.
Q. Can I contact other trainees on the same course?
Yes! We are well aware of the isolation and uncertainty that some students feel because they are working alone. To help overcome this (and other such symptoms) Tlc operate a "Keep in Touch" scheme. Enclosed with your course handbook there is a biographical notes form for you to complete and return to the centre. With your permission we photocopy and collate this information and send it to other course participants, thus providing a channel of communication between course members to "get in touch" if they so wish. We also operate a "drop in" chat room on our site which offers trainee/trainee and tutor/trainee discussion periods at prescribed times to chat things through.
Q. Can I do a "Business English" course?
Yes, providing you already hold a recognised certificate qualification in TESOL.

Tlc offer a number of business courses throught the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Please go to our LCCI link form more information.
Q. Is there a demand for teachers of English?
Quite simply — Yes! The demand for qualified teachers of English is growing at a staggering rate.

This is a boom industry — more so now than ever — and because employers are becoming more and more discerning and are demanding to see professional qualifications, the need to qualify is a must — just to get to the interview.
